Best Time to Sell a Gift Card: What 27 Days of Rates Show

If you're holding a card and waiting for a better rate, our own record says you're chasing about 0.6 percent. We read the GiftCash NG rates board on 20 separate days between 16 September and 13 October 2026, and the four dollar cards we tracked moved inside a 0.64 percent band across that stretch.

Put numbers on it. A $100 Steam card paid ₦82,289 on the worst day and ₦82,813 on the best, a gap of ₦524. A $200 Apple card swung ₦1,432.00 end to end. Move that same $200 from an Xbox card to an Apple card and the difference is ₦133,943.20. Timing is a rounding error. The card in your hand is the money.

So the honest answer to "when should I sell" is the day you need the cash, not a date on a calendar. Here's the evidence, plus the handful of things that really do move your payout.

Twenty checks, twenty-seven days, one flat line

Each check reads the live rates board and works out the naira per dollar for the same four cards. Only complete captures make it into the record, so a half-loaded page never shows up as a rate movement. Each card is read on the same band every time as well, which matters because a card that moves to a different band isn't the same thing as a card that got repriced.

All four come out at 0.64 percent. The top of the range landed on 20 September, the bottom on 1 October, and nothing in between was big enough to plan a sale around. If you had deliberately waited for the best day of that month, you would have beaten the worst day by ₦524 on a $100 Steam card.

Why the naira rate sits still

Look at what moved underneath. The same board publishes a reference line, and over those 27 days it drifted from ₦1,327 to ₦1,336.

That is 0.7 percent, and it's where the 0.64 percent on the cards comes from. Your payout is set by that line, not by the month. Nobody in Lagos is repricing Apple cards because the month changed, and nobody is discounting Steam because it's a quiet week in October. When the line moves a little, every card moves a little with it. When it doesn't, nothing else does either.

Ghana moves more, and it's worth knowing why

Ghana behaves differently. There's no published reference line on the cedis view, and the quotes drifted upward through October before easing back at the end.

Steam runs ₵7.08 to ₵7.32 per dollar, which is a 3.4 percent range. On a $100 card that works out to ₵24.00 between the best and worst day, roughly five times the Nigerian swing in percentage terms. Real, but still not rent. If you sell in Accra and you're weighing a week's wait, ₵24 on a $100 Steam card is the whole prize.

The lever that's 93 times bigger

Now put today's rates side by side at a single face value, so the comparison is fair.

Same $200, same day, same country. Apple and iTunes pay ₦225,546.40 while Xbox pays ₦91,603.20, a gap of ₦133,943.20. Set that against the ₦1,432.00 you could have gained by timing a $200 Apple card perfectly over 27 days, and the card choice is about 93 times the size of the timing effect.

The ceiling on the board is ₦1,127.73 per dollar, held by Apple and iTunes. The floor is ₦458.02, held by Xbox. That is a 2.46 times spread between the best and worst dollar card, and it doubles as a free scam test: anyone quoting you above ₦1,127.73 per dollar for a dollar card is promising more than the top of the board pays.

Bigger face value helps Apple and hurts Amazon

Face value isn't a straight upgrade, and the direction isn't the same for every brand.

Apple runs three bands and the rate climbs as you go up. It pays ₦1,091.78 per dollar between $40 and $50, ₦1,118.41 between $100 and $150, then ₦1,127.73 from $150 to $500.

Amazon runs the other way. Its lower band, $50 to $100, pays ₦665.72 per dollar, and its upper band, $100 to $500, pays ₦652.41. That is about 2 percent less per dollar, so a bigger Amazon card pays slightly worse, not better.

One rule worth keeping: a value sitting exactly on a boundary is priced on the band it starts. A $100 Amazon card lands in the $100 to $500 band, which starts at ₦65,241, rather than the lower band's ₦66,572.

How to time a sale without guessing

Work through this before you quote anyone a number.

1. Open the rates board and read your card's line for today, not last month.
2. Check the balance is intact. A scratched or partly spent card gets rejected after you've already agreed a price.
3. Find the band your face value falls into. A $100 Amazon card and a $75 one don't use the same rate.
4. Compare your card against the ₦1,127.73 ceiling. A quote above it is a warning, not a win.
