Sell Gift Cards in Tema: Ghana Cedis Payout Guide

Tema moves more containers than any other port in Ghana, and a fair share of the gift cards sold here arrived through it. A sister in London posts one home. A crew member picks another up duty-free in Dubai. By the time a card reaches Community 1 or Ashaiman, the owner usually wants cedis rather than store credit.

So the question worth asking is what that card pays today. Here's the Tema answer, taken from the live board and not from last month's rumour.

How to compare two cards properly

A band tells you what a card is worth. It doesn't tell you which card pays more per unit of balance, and that's the number you need when someone offers one flat price for whatever you bring.

Divide the top of a band by the top face value. Apple's ₵4,894.11 over $500 gives ₵9.79 for every dollar. Razer and Lululemon both land on ₵9.13, Steam ₵7.16, PlayStation ₵6.93, Target ₵6.82, Google Play and Best Buy ₵6.36, Xbox ₵3.98.

Two $500 cards on the same table can be worth ₵4,894.11 and ₵1,987.69. That's a gap of ₵2,906.42, and it's why "we buy any gift card" usually means the Xbox end of the list.

One thing to get straight before you argue about percentages. The Naira side of the site prints a reference line, so Nigerian sellers can see what share of the official rate they're getting. Ghana's page doesn't. Worth knowing before someone in Tema quotes you a share of a number that was never published.

Compare cards against each other instead. On today's numbers, Apple's top band pays 2.46 times what Xbox pays per dollar. And don't hold out for a spike. Steam's $10 code is quoted at ₵71.65 right now, against ₵70.84 in our own 16 September snapshot and ₵71.78 on 20 September. The full range is ₵0.94, about 1.3%. Waiting costs you a week and earns a rounding error, while the gap between Apple and Xbox is a hundred times wider. Which cards move in Tema, and which currency to hold

Gaming credit is the busiest stream in this city. Community 25 and the Ashaiman side are full of players, and Steam and PlayStation codes change hands quickly because they're easy to verify and easy to pass on.

Steam and Xbox are also the only two cards in the table that quote four currencies. Both price in USD, GBP, EUR and Canadian dollars. Nothing else on the Ghana board does.

The currency on the card matters as much as the card itself. £500 of Steam pays ₵5,258.14, which is ₵10.52 for every pound. The dollar row on the same card pays ₵7.16 a dollar. So £250 of Steam balance is worth about ₵2,629, against roughly ₵1,791 for $250. If your card was bought in the UK by an aunt who didn't check the currency, you're holding the better half of that gap.

Apple and iTunes arrive a different way. The card is sent for a phone or a laptop, and nobody in Tema is buying a $500 handset from the Apple Store. The $150 to $500 band sits at the top of every dollar row at ₵9.79, so it's the best of the lot. Apple cards hold that rate across the whole band.

Razer is the one to remember if you have a small code. ₵45.65 buys a $5 card, and the per-dollar rate stays flat at ₵9.13 all the way to $500. Sitting on a tiny Razer code gains you nothing.

Xbox is the weak end at ₵3.98 a dollar. It still converts, it just pays less than half of Apple, and it's usually the card people forget in a drawer for two years.

Cards that aren't in the table quote on the same board. Target, Google Play and Amazon are all there. Amazon's $100 to $500 band pays ₵566.26 to ₵2,831.30.

How the cedis reach you in Tema

Mobile Money is the default payout route here. All three networks work.

The name rule is where sellers lose money. Ghana's SIM registration ties a wallet to a Ghana Card, so a MoMo number still registered to a cousin can't take the payment. Fix that before you sell, not after.

After that it's straightforward. Confirm the rate, send the code, wait for the alert. Cash out with an agent around Community 1 or the Ashaiman lorry station, and ask what the withdrawal charge is before you hand over your phone.

Before you send anybody a code

Four checks, in order:

1. Open the live rate board and confirm your card and face value are both listed. Bands change.
2. Check the balance yourself on the issuer's site, and keep a photo of the card and the receipt.
3. Match the payout name to the wallet name. A mismatch is the most common reason a payout stalls in Tema.
4. Hold the transaction reference until the cedis land. Fifteen to thirty minutes is the site's own promise.

One warning, because it costs sellers here real money. Any buyer who asks for an activation fee, a tax or a clearance charge before paying you is running the oldest trick there is.
